Dogs and ponds/lakes

Ponds and lakes, like the beautiful Ampleforth Abbey ponds in Gilling Woods, are home to many different types of wildlife. Sites like these can be magnets for pet dogs which love to swim in the water. Such activity can cause bankside erosion and damage to important habitats and there is increasing concern about the risk of pollution from ‘on coat’ flea treatments. These treatments contain toxic neonicotinoid pesticides which affect insects such as dragonflies and bees. Please be respectful when visiting such sites and consider keeping your dogs out of the water.
