From mindful wild walks and alpaca treks to riding and mountain biking, the Howardian Hills has an activity to satisfy most. There is much to explore and discover in this surprising and unique landscape.

River Rye – Ryedale Angling Club

‘The Lower Water’ as described on the Ryedale Angler’s club website is within the Howardian Hills AONB.

Huttons Ambo Angling Club – River Derwent

Club contact: Paul Thompson, 01653 618602


The River Derwent, which flows down the eastern side of the Howardian Hills, is a popular focus for recreation.  If you do wish to canoe along this stretch of the river it is essential you gain the consent of the landowners before accessing the river.

The local canoe clubs are Malton and Norton Canoe Club and York Canoe Club.

All the land and associated shooting rights in the Howardian Hills is in private ownership. Shooting of any kind may not take place without permission of the landowner. Commercial shooting in the AONB consists of seasonal pheasant and partridge shooting – please visit specialist websites such as Guns on Pegs to look for availability.

Swimming and Sports Centres

St Alban’s Sports Centre at Ampleforth is open to the public on a pay-as-you-go basis. Facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, squash courts and fitness classes.

Helmsley has an outdoor swimming pool, open in the summer months

Malton and Norton-on-Derwent are on the eastern edge of the Howardian Hills. There is Malton Community Sports Centre.

There is an indoor swimming pool and gym in Norton-on-Derwent.
