When you look up at night do you see a sky full of stars and the Milky Way arching overhead?
It is becoming an increasingly rare sight. But it remains one of the very special qualities of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, which, compared with urban areas, retains low levels of light pollution.
That is vital for wildlife like bats, moths and hedgehogs, all of which have suffered major declines, and is also beneficial for people, who can connect with nature and get a good night’s rest.
We want to keep it this way and you can help by being careful in your use of outside lighting.
Making the right choices allows us to enjoy the convenience of lighting without its negative impacts. That means lights that are well shielded, only on when required and which shine with a softer warm white colour.
