Howsham Mill
The hidden ruin of Howsham Mill was found by a local out walking one day. He immediately recognised its historic interest and applied to the AONB to help fund the first phase of the building's restoration. Trees had grown up around the mill - these were cleared to prevent any further damage to the structure of the building.
The AONB contributed a grant to cover the cost of the work and gave support in acquiring additional funds to carry the project on to its next phase. The plan is to restore the building, reinstate the water wheel to generate electricity and create an educational resource centre. This will be achieved with the help of various organisations and volunteers, working in partnership with the owners, the Renewable Heritage Trust.
