Welcome to
the Howardian Hills
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

The Howardian Hills AONB covers 204 sq km (79 sq miles) of the North Yorkshire countryside, nestled between the North York Moors National Park, the Yorkshire Wolds and the Vale of York. It is a unique and captivating landscape with its well-wooded rolling countryside, patchwork of arable and pasture fields, scenic villages and historic country houses with classic parkland landscapes.

The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty designation was confirmed in 1987, in recognition of its national landscape importance.

On our website you can find out: why the landscape is of national importance; what the area looks like and what there is to see and do. You can also find out what is happening in the area and see examples of the work the AONB Joint Advisory Committee does to manage the sometimes conflicting issues.

Please note that our website is regularly being updated and information frequently added, so please bear with us. Please contact the AONB Team if you have a query that the website doesn't answer.
