Walking in the AONB

Walking Routes

We produce a number of walks leaflets. Our series of History and Habitats leaflets describes various circular routes in and around the villages of Hovingham, Welburn and Nunnington. With distances varying from 1½ miles to nearly 5 miles in length, the routes encourage people to explore the landscape, wildlife and history on their doorsteps. We have recently added four new leaflets in this series (produced in-house), with circular routes around Terrington ranging from 2½ miles to 6½ miles. The leaflets can be viewed/printed using the links below (they may take a while to download).

Please note that as these leaflets are free-of-charge we are unable to send out originals. They are available to pick up in the shops/pubs in the villages concerned:

Walking for Health

The AONB has recently set up a page on the Walking for Health website. This website details led and self-guided walks throughout the country for participants from a 'beginner' level upwards. All walks have a strong social aspect to them and the led walks are guided by trained leaders.

Why not take a look at the website to find out what is going on throughout the County and beyond.

Further information

There are also a number of websites and inexpensive walking books (available in local shops) which contain details of walks in the Howardian Hills. For more information please look at:

The Howardian Way
A new website which gives information about an informal route being created from Husthwaite and Coxwold in the west to Castle Howard and Welburn in the east.

The AONB Committee finished an extensive programme of improvement works in 2005, enhancing the condition of the Public Rights of Way system in the whole of the AONB. The work was undertaken in partnership with the North Yorkshire County Council Rights of Way Section and the (then) Countryside Agency. Work included replacing finger posts with new 'destination and distance' posts, replacing stiles with gates to make access easier and installing new footbridges and board-walks.
