Living more sustainably

There are many ways in which we can all adjust how we live to make it more sustainable. As well as helping to prevent climate change and conserving our habitats, several of these measures also have the added benefit of saving money.

Here you can find links to a series of information sheets that we have produced covering a range of topics relating to sustainable living. They range from large-scale options such as installing wind, hydro or solar power, to smaller measures such as adjusting how we travel or recycling household waste.

Content on several of the sheets has kindly been donated by Arnside and Silverdale AONB - where this is the case it is noted on the sheet - thanks go to them for providing us with such a comprehensive basis on which to build this resource.

Here are our downloadable fliers about heat and energy generation as well as information on composting household waste, which is available in both colour and black and white versions.

With the introduction of financial incentives for household energy-generating technologies like solar PV, wind turbines and ground/air/water-source heat pumps, these installations are becoming much more common in the AONB. We have produced a guide showing which technologies/sizes of installation are Permitted Development and which need Planning Permission. The table shows the position as at 1st December 2011 - if you are considering a renewable energy project then you are strongly advised to contact your Local Planning Authority (Ryedale or Hambleton District Councils) to get the up-to-date situation, as the Regulations change frequently.

This page is still being completed. In the not too distant future it will contain information sheets relating to:

  • Reducing energy use
  • Water conservation
  • Recycling
  • Transport
  • Gardening for wildlife

GreenBeams is a not-for-profit company aimed at offsetting carbon and helping the environment by supplying chunky timber beams.

The initial funding to set up the GreenBeams website and to provide grants to sawmills for storing hardwood timber was mostly provided through grants and sponsorship.

The Howardian Hills AONB Sustainable Development Fund was amongst the funders supporting the fledgling company. Details of the ful llist of funders can be found on the GreenBeams.com website.
